How long does a boiler repair usually take?
Simple repairs such as replacing a thermostat or bleeding air from the system take one to two hours. Replacing internal components takes longer. The plumber will assess the fault and give a time estimate once on site.
What causes a radiator to stay cold at the bottom?
Sludge and debris accumulate inside radiators and pipes over time, blocking water flow. A power flush cleans the entire heating system. Bleeding the radiator removes air that traps heat. A plumber can diagnose which fix is needed.
Can I unblock a drain myself?
A plunger works for minor blockages in baths and sinks caused by hair and soap. Drain rods or a plumber's auger reach further down. Grease, roots and structural damage require professional jetting or repair equipment.
Why does my toilet keep running after flushing?
The fill valve, flush valve or flapper inside the cistern wears out and no longer holds water tight. The cistern keeps refilling to maintain the water level. A plumber replaces the worn part, which costs less than replacing the whole toilet.
What's the difference between a leak and weeping?
A leak is water escaping fast enough to be heard or seen as a flow or drip. Weeping is moisture appearing slowly on pipe surfaces or joints, often from corrosion or loose fittings. Both should be addressed before they cause water damage.
Do I need to drain the system before replacing a tap?
Usually yes. The plumber isolates the supply to that tap, opens it to release pressure, then removes it. Older homes without isolation valves need the main supply switched off at the stopcock before work begins.
